The complicated finances of the first major test of small modular nuclear reactors.

Enlarge/ NuScale's reactor-in-a-can. 206 with 86 posters participating Earlier this year, the US took a major step that could potentially change the economics of nuclear power: it approved a design for a small, modular nuclear reactor from a company called NuScale. These small reactors are intended to overcome the economic problems that have ground the construction of large nuclear plants to a near halt. While each only produces a fraction of the power possible with a large plant, the modular design allows for mass production and a design that requires less external safety support. But safety approval is just an early step in the process of building a plant. And the leading proposal for the first NuScale plant is running into the same problem as traditional designs: finances. The propo...

Is it a currency? Is it an asset? Or is it perhaps a commodity? In an effort to drive up its price, (in)famous crypto evangelicals have been coming up and attributing an increasing number of use cases to Bitcoin. BTC One of the most profound ones, often touted by such figures in financial media, is the so-called hedge. In order to attract interest of larger and institutional investors, Bitcoin had to be painted as a serious investment vehicle. One with its own unique characteristics. Incomparable with conventional financial instruments such as stocks, bonds, and commodities. Thus: serving the purpose of decreasing risk in a diversified portfolio of investments, because its behaving differently in certain market conditions. That theory is all and well, but how did it actually play out in ...

The PlayStation 5 won’t allow players to transfer saves to a USB flash drive or external hard drive. Instead, players can only copy PS5 save data to PS Plus cloud storage, which requires a paid subscription.

At the moment, the PlayStation 5 doesnt support copying save data onto external storage devices. Instead, the consoles only option for moving save files from one PS5 to another, or backing up save data, will be to use Sonys cloud storage which is available exclusively to PlayStation Plus subscribers. This is different from how it works on PlayStation 4, which allows users to back up save data to a USB drive as well as cloud storage. Without that option, PS5 owners are at risk of losing their save files if some catastrophe befalls them like their console getting stolen in a robbery, or destroyed in a flood, or bricked by a firmware update unless they pay for an active PlayStation Plus subscription. The PS4/PS5 difference becomes clear in the PS5s system settings. In the Saved Data and Gam...

The Democrat candidate is now in the lead in Pennsylvania after late-counted mail-in ballots overturned Donald Trump’s advantage – and if he keeps that lead, he’ll have won the Presidency

Joe Biden has pulled ahead in the key swing state of Pennsylvania in a move that brings him within touching distance of the US Presidency. The Democrat candidate overturned Donald Trump s lead of more than half a million votes after winning the vast majority of mail-in ballots - which are counted later. If Mr Biden retains his lead - which stood above 5,000 votes at 2pm GMT - he will win Pennsylvania and its 20 Electoral College votes. That would be enough on its own to guarantee Biden the Presidency, even if he loses all three of the other swing states where he is now favourite - including Arizona, which Fox News called for Biden on Wednesday. It comes hours after Biden pulled ahead in Georgia, which would also all but guarantee him the Presidency on its own. Read More Related Art...

Boris is the wise ol CEO of TNW who writes a weekly column on everything about being an entrepreneur in tech from managing stress to embracing awkwardness. You can get his musings straight to your inbox by signing up for his newsletter! A few weeks ago, I saw two incredibly athletic women perform a pretty impressive workout. They were hanging from bars and passing a weight to each other. It meant using only one arm to hang from the bar, while using the other to pass the weight. And in between movements theyd rest the weight on their knees, while still suspending themselves from the bar. I was thoroughly impressed, so I suggested trying this with my personal trainer. The next time I met him, he tried to first prepare me by explaining how incredibly difficult that workout actually was. I ...

“I believe in all of us and what we can do together,” Solomon said in a message sent to the banks’ entire staff on Wednesday evening.

As the fate of the presidency hangs in the balance, the CEO of Goldman Sachs has become the latest Wall Street executive to send a reassuring message to his staff on Wednesday. David Solomon sent a firmwide voice message to Goldman's nearly 40,000-person worldwide workforce on Wednesday evening, addressing the results of the presidential election, which, as of Thursday morning, remained undecided. The transcript of the message was viewed by Business Insider. "I know that many of our people are anxious for the election results, and that everyone in the country — and frankly, everyone around the world — is craving clarity," Solomon said, according to the transcript. "As I said in my message to you in late spring when we were witnessing deeply disturbing acts of hatred and racism in the US...

The PlayStation 5 remake of Demon’s Souls will get an updated character creator with a bunch of new tools, as well as a new photo mode for snapping pics in Boletaria. Its release date is Nov. 12, the same day as the PS5.

The original Demons Souls for PlayStation 3 gave players an extensive suite of character creation tools, a long list of sliders that tweaked everything from cheekbones to eyebrows to jawlines. The results, however, often ranged from doofy to derpy to downright Monster Factory freak of nature. In other words, it was hard to make your Demons Souls character look good, which was acceptable, because you were probably going to walk around with a helmet on most of the time. The Demons Souls remake for PlayStation 5 will include a similarly in-depth but now much better-looking character creator, as revealed Thursday on the PlayStation Blog. Demons Souls creative director Gavin Moore said that players will be able to customize their characters appearance with up to 16 million permutations. Weve...

Police should have avoided an arrest that could be seen as politically motivated

The arrest of Arnab Goswami, editor-in-chief of Republic Media Network, is, without doubt, a high-handed action that may contain an element of vendetta. There was really no reason to arrest Mr. Goswami, or any other citizen for that matter, in a case that has been reopened after being formally closed by a competent court in 2019. It might be true that the police then may have, under political influence, unlawfully closed a complaint that Mr. Goswami and two others had abetted the suicide of Anvay Naik, an interior designer in May 2018, and that there may be sufficient cause for it to be investigated afresh. Given the presence of an incriminating suicide note, there may be some substance in the allegation. However, there is no reason to arrest anyone, unless they are likely to evade trial, ...
