For all the hype around 4K in gaming, the buzz around high refresh rates still feels like a slightly more niche topic. In spite of that, the improvement you can see in your gaming from increasing your framerate beyond the paltry 60 frames-per-second you’re stuck with on typical monitors and TVs is staggering. Some gaming monitors have offered refresh rate improvements anywhere from a slight booth to 75Hz up to 144Hz for some time, but now we’re seeing gaming monitors that can offer an insanely smooth 240Hz refresh that. That kind of speed will leave the movement of every visual of your screen feeling so fluid that you may have a hard time going back to anything less. If you’re playing competitive online games or esports titles, that extra speed can absolutely be worth it, though.A 240Hz monitor can ensure you’re getting the latest information in your game, so you have an easier time spotting and tracking targets and reacting to them. We’ve tested many 240Hz monitors to find the ones that won’t just give you that speed advantage but also some handy extras so you won’t be making many sacrifices just for the sake of speed. If you’re interested in the speed but not sure you need to go all the way to 240Hz, you can also check out these 144Hz monitors.

Not only does this display deliver 2,560 x 1,440 pixels, but you also get a 27-inch screen that’s larger than most high-refresh rate displays that are usually only 25-inches in size.Beyond giving you a bigger, sharper picture, the HP Omen X 27 also boasts a 400 nit peak brightness and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro for a tear-free experience that’s also HDR capable. What to look for in a 240Hz Gaming Monitor
Before you plunk down your hard-earned cash, there are a few things about 240Hz gaming monitors to keep in mind. First, as refresh rate goes up there are diminishing returns on what were able to perceive. While theres a pretty significant difference in what you can see and/or perceive onscreen between 60Hz and 144Hz monitors, the perceptible difference between 144Hz and 240Hz monitors is much lessto the point where some people might not see or feel it at all. If you have a 144Hz monitor now, you are probably better off saving your money, in other words.Theres nothing better than being able to respond faster than your enemy.
Also, at the moment all 240Hz monitors use TN panels, bringing with them the deficiencies of that technologynamely color accuracy and viewing angles. All currently available monitors are also limited to 27-inches and 1080p, so the increase of processing power needed for higher resolutions isn’t an issue, but you will need to be hitting 200+ frames per second, so you will need a very powerful video card (like an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super) to keep those frame rate numbers up.Mark Knapp is a regular contributor to IGN and an irregular Tweeter on Twitter @Techn0Mark
