50 years of education for a better world

We are living in a very unusual time. Most of us are at home, some working remotely and many unfortunately having lost their livelihoods, whether temporarily or long term. We will get through this of course, but 'working' might never look the same again and the idea of your home and the place where you work as being distinct entities could very soon be somewhat of an alien concept. The coding industry as a whole has been ahead of the curve when it comes to remote or flexible working, as in most cases the principal tools needed to code have been a laptop and an internet connection. However, a great deal of the qualifications needed to be a coder have traditionally been earned in person, at a coding camp or school. This is no longer the case and many coding schools have adapted to our new wo...

ARMY are marching toward a brighter future

Last week, South Korean superstars BTS declared their solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, releasing a statement specifying that they "stand against racial discrimination" and "condemn violence." Now, the seven Bangtan boys Jin, Jimin, RM, Jungkook, J-Hope, Suga, and V are putting their money where their tweets are. Last week, BTS and their label, Big Hit Entertainment, quietly donated $1 million to Black Lives Matter, Variety reported on Saturday (June 6). The move came as demonstrations around the globe continue, protesting systemic racism and police brutality against the Black community in the United States, particularly, in the wake of the murders of unarmed Black citizens George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and many others. While the group did not publicly comment ...

Trump 2020 polls: Colin Powell, James Mattis and Lisa Murkowski the latest Republicans to give statements that should scare Trump — and give Biden hope.

In mid-April, I took to these pages to make it clear what nearly all Washington insiders have privately concluded: In a fair election, there is no chance for President Donald Trump to survive the electoral reckoning that looms. And now it seems that after Trump's mishandling of the protests after the death of George Floyd, on top of his mishandling of the coronavirus crisis, some of these insiders from even within the president's own party have put their fingers to the wind. Sen. Lisa Murkowski's comments last week are a case in point. On Thursday, Murkowski, a moderate from Alaska, said she is considering not backing Trump's re-election. Murkowski, who voted to acquit Trump in his impeachment trials, said she was "struggling with it. I have struggled with it for a long time." Despite lea...

In a new study, researchers look more closely at the mechanisms at play behind how the human brain balances feelings of stress and calmness.

Two regions of the brain play pivotal roles in the experience of stress and the restoration of calm, an imaging study has discovered. The effects of stress on the mind and body, such as heightened alertness and a rapid heartbeat, are a mixed blessing for modern humans. In our distant evolutionary past, the stress of encountering a hungry predator or squaring up to a rival helped to keep us alive. In the modern world, however, the immediate psychological and physiological effects of stress in situations, such as an exam, a job interview, or a first date, can be counterproductive. More seriously, chronic stress has associations with worse physical and mental health. Fortunately, unlike other animals, humans can develop cognitive strategies for reducing their subjective experiences of...

The plastic surgery accusations are getting to her

Skip to main content Friday, May 29, 2020 - 09:41 Khloe Kardashian has clapped back at fans for claiming that she’s undergone facial surgery to change her appearance. The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star faced backlash after uploading a heavily-filtered selfie on Instagram. While some fans were loving the end product, others claimed that she's setting unrealistic beauty standards for her young fans. “She really needs to own up to the facetune bs. And once and for all stop doing it,” one person responded, as another said: “Your entire face has changed. You need to stop with the surgeries @khloekardashian.” When a particular fan reacted: “Why do you look so different in all your photos?”, Khloe couldn’t help poking fun at the rumours that she undergoes plastic surgery every few day...

Watching videos of different tasks being completed is oddly satisfying and reminds us of pre-lockdown life, says Annalee Newitz

By Annalee Newitz 10'000 Hours/Getty Images IT STARTED innocently enough, with a friend telling me about the Peregrine Nest Cam at the University of California, Berkeley. High in the campus clock tower, under a webcam’s watchful eye, some biology researchers had arranged a box of gravel for two peregrine falcons and their three floofy, awkward babies. I couldn’t stop watching. I’ve spent weeks following along as the chicks shed their down, fought for chunks of meat and screamed at the top of their lungs. Now, they are almost ready to fly and I feel a deep sense of accomplishment. But why? I didn’t …
